Frequently Asked Questions

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is the art, science, and philosophy of natural healing.  It concentrates on conservatively restoring or enhancing wellness without relying upon drugs and surgery.  Its origins can be traced to the beginning of recorded history with ancient mentions of spinal manipulation and pain relief as far back as 2700 B.C.  While chiropractic’s American roots go back more than 115 years, its basic premise of natural health dates back to spinal manipulations first used by the Greek physician Hippocrates, the father of healing, during the 4th century B.C.  He wisely wrote, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases”.

Philosophy, Art, Science

Although the appearance of painful symptoms may be the initial reason why many patients request healthcare, doctors of chiropractic do not treat symptoms.  Chiropractors look for the source of dysfunction rather than attempting to mask the resulting pain.  The primary focus of chiropractic is the detection and correction of joint misalignments with subsequent nervous system dysfunction.

The spinal cord, a critical part of the central nervous system, is responsible for the transmission of messages to and from the brain.  These nerve impulses are necessary to direct every part of the human body in proper function. A spinal or other joint malfunction can interrupt the transmission of these messages and affect the body’s nervous system causing muscle pain, organ dysfunction, and other imbalances.

Is Chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic Adjustment

The chiropractic adjustment is exceedingly safe, efficient, specific, and non-invasive.  Every day in America, nearly one million chiropractic adjustments are given.  Complications are exceedingly rare, as is evidence by the negligible malpractice insurance rates paid by most chiropractic physicians.

What does a Chiropractic Adjustment do?

The Chiropractic adjustment is direct, precise, and specific. The purpose of a Chiropractic adjustment is to realign the junction of joints, thus removing interference in the nervous system, and restoring function and communication between the brain and body. Remember that our body is a self-healing marvel, consisting of a neuromuscular connection between the brain and the body.

A simple explanation would be:

    • An adjustment stimulates input to the nervous system to help blocking pain.
    • An adjustment restores proper motion, function, and increases joint stability; thus normalizing joint range of motion
    • An adjustment promotes faster healing.

Muscle and Nerve cells die without proper stimulation. The Chiropractic Adjustment is the most unique cellular stimulation known to man

What causes the sound that often accompanies and adjustment?

When a chiropractic adjustment is applied, the motion creates space between two joints. During this act, gas is released creating the sound you might hear. This is completely harmless and very similar to removing a suction cup or opening a bottle of champagne. However, it is important to remember the sounds is not what determines an effective adjustment. A successful adjustment improves the mobility and restoration of joint.

Is Chiropractic care expensive?

There are a few factors that can determine the cost of your Chiropractic care: insurance rates, office rates of the provider, frequency of visits, if x-rays or other imaging are taken (see blog: Why do I need x-rays) Regardless of the actual cost of Chiropractic treatment, the value remains priceless.
